HIMSS Analytics Honors Bristol Hospital With Stage 7 Recognition
BRISTOL, Conn—Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics has announced that Bristol Hospital has become the first hospital in the State of Connecticut and the first in the country utilizing the Meditech 6.x platform to be certified as a Stage 7 level organization on the EMR Adoption Model
HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record (EMR) systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ database. Earlier this year, Bristol Hospital achieved Stage 6 of the EMRAM.
“Bristol Hospital is an excellent example of how a solo community hospital can advance patient safety and care efficiency with a fully paperless deployment of an acute care EHR. They have exceeded all HIMSS Analytics benchmarks for CPOE and Closed Loop Medication Administration requirements. They have used the EHR to carry out an enterprise transformation and have positioned themselves to begin to use the EHR-derived data to improve quality, safety, efficiency and population health,” said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president, HIMSS Analytics. “This is an example of what a community hospital can do to engage its community medical staff with appropriate vision to embrace technology to drive change.”
Bristol Hospital utilizes Meditech 6.x as its EMR platform which was launched in June 2011. The Meditech capabilities include bar code med verification, physician and nurse documentation on line, and clinical decision support, all linked by fully integrated clinical modules. As a result of the implementation of Meditech, all hospital departments are linked to provide a continuous electronic record of patient care from admission to discharge.
Kurt A. Barwis, FACHE, president and CEO of Bristol Hospital and Health Care Group Inc, said the Stage 7 achievement further reinforces the hospital’s commitment to provide its clinicians with the tools to deliver the highest quality care for its patients.
“The Stage 7 designation puts us in a prestigious category along with 140 hospitals across the country which is less than 2 percent of hospitals nationwide,” Barwis said. “We are the first hospital in the country utilizing the Meditech 6.x platform to achieve this award, and I commend every member of our organization for the concerted effort that we have employed to pursue our goals of quality and safety for our patients.”
The EMRAM has eight stages, ranging from zero, (a predominantly paper environment), to seven, (a predominantly paperless environment). Tracking their progress in completing these eight stages, hospitals can review the implementation and utilization of information technology applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.
These hospitals also have achieved a significant advancement in their IT capabilities that positions them to successfully address many of the current industry transformations, such as meaningful use criteria in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, claims attachments for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, pay for performance and government quality reporting programs.
