What is the Endocrine System?

The endocrine system consists of glands that produces chemicals called hormones, which help control many important body functions, for example, the system plays a role in how your heart beats, how your bones strengthen and grow. The endocrine system even plays a role in your ability to make a baby.

The body's endocrine system includes the pancreas, the thyroid, parathyroid, pineal, hypothalamus, adrenal and pituitary glands, and the ovaries and testes.

What Can Cause an Endocrine Disorder?

Endocrine disorders typically fall within two categories.

  • The result of a gland producing too much or too little of a hormone. This is referred to as a hormone imbalance.
  • Development of lesions in the endocrine system which may or may not affect your hormone level.

Symptoms and Treatment

Symptoms of an endocrine disorder often vary depending on the specific gland that is involved. The general symptom of fatigue and weakness is typical in most endocrine issues. An thorough evaluation along with blood and urine tests are done to determine your hormone levels to help diagnosis the issue.

Following diagnosis, your physician will work with you to determine your best plan of care, taking into careful consideration your goals. Treatments depend on the severity of the disorder.

Diabetes

Diabetes is the most commonly treated disease of the endocrine system. Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar in the blood. Bristol Health has a specific program to educate, treat and prevent diabetes.
