What Is WIC?   

WIC is a supplemental cost-effective nutrition intervention program available for eligible women, infants and children up to the age of 5. WIC is designed to promote health and prevent nutrition related health problems by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding information and support. It also provides referrals to other federal and state programs, and healthcare providers, as well as providing supplemental nutritious foods.

Who is Eligible?

Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, new mothers up to 6 months after delivery, infants and children up to age 5

To be Eligible you must:

• Live in Connecticut
• Have a gross income that falls within specific guidelines
• You automatically qualify if participating in food stamps, TFA or Husky A Medical Insurance

Benefits of the WIC Program

Studies have shown that women who participate in the WIC program have fewer premature births, higher birth weight infants, and fewer fetal and infant deaths. WIC provides nutritious foods containing high levels of iron, vitamin C, thiamin, niacin, calcium, and vitamin B6. These nutrients promote health, growth and development.
