The Parent and Child Center at Bristol Hospital has a special goal, which centers on the important concept of "Family Life Works." Our primary focus is on prevention of child abuse, neglect and family violence by providing support systems for families. Our programs are designed to target several areas that have been identified as crucial to developing strong, nurturing families:
  • stress/anger management
  • family finances
  • child development
  • communication skills
  • effective discipline
  • planning/decision-making skills
The Parent and Child Center at Bristol Hospital is actively looking for volunteers for several of its programs. If you would like to volunteer, please call 860.585.3481.

Our mission is:
  • To promote and support healthy families through education and resources that help them understand how to work together to provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for children to live and grow.
  • To increase public awareness about child safety, community resources, and family life through events, workshops, mentoring and referrals.
  • To collaborate with service providers to sustain ongoing agency networking, ensuring that the needs of every family are met and child abuse and neglect are prevented.

Parent Support Center

Families can "drop in" during program hours to discuss struggles and challenges in their lives. Utilizing our Resource Library, parents can:
  • find information on an issue encountered with a child
  • learn about services available to the community
  • obtain referrals to community agencies
  • have a "listening ear" from our qualified and skilled staff or volunteers
The Resource Library also includes books and videos that illustrate ideas for dealing with specific child behaviors and parenting issues.

The Caring Closet

Our Caring Closet offers basic need items – diapers, wipes, baby food, clothing and other baby items – to low-income clients. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis. All items are supplied through community donations and may not always be in stock. Call The Parent and Child Center at Bristol Hospital at 860.585.3481 for more information about signing up for this program.  Current drop-in hours are
  • Mondays – 1:30 - 2:30 pm
  • Wednesdays – 11:30 am - 1 pm
  • Fridays – 9:30 - 10:30 am

The Nurturing Families Network

The Nurturing Families Network provides assistance and support to new, first-time parents during pregnancy and beyond, by answering questions, providing tips on how to care for your baby and yourself, and offering information on community resources that can help you. Nurturing Connections provides phone-based support prenatally to up to 6 months. Home visits help expectant and new parents learn to care for their baby and adjust to being parents. Focus groups bring expectant and new parents together to support each other, share experiences and work together to become the best parents they can be.  All services are free.  Families must enroll within 90 days following the birth of their first child.

The Family Life Works Program

The Family Life Works Program provides parenting education and child development classes throughout Connecticut. Topics include a variety of family life issues, such as child development and positive parenting (prenatal through college-age children). Classes are offered to the community through the Center's Program Guide and the hospital’s Pathways catalog.
